Frequently Asked Questions
Got questions? We've got answers.
What is RenameClick?
RenameClick is a local-first desktop app for macOS and Windows that renames, organizes, and searches files by their actual content instead of messy original filenames.
Drop in photos, PDFs, or documents, review AI-generated names and categories, then apply changes when you're ready. AI Search helps you find files by meaning, and Auto Flow can watch folders like Downloads or Scans and process new files automatically.
By default, processing runs on-device with the built-in local model, so no cloud is required. Optional providers such as OpenAI, Google Gemini, Alibaba Cloud, LM Studio, and Ollama are available if you want a different setup.
RenameClick also supports right-click integration in Finder and File Explorer, EXIF-based naming patterns, custom instructions, and undo/redo.
Do I need a GPU?
A dedicated GPU with 4GB VRAM is recommended for the best experience. Local LLMs run fastest on a GPU. If you use a CPU or have insufficient VRAM, RenameClick will use your system RAM, which is roughly 10-20x slower.
Does RenameClick work offline?
Yes. RenameClick is offline-first: local AI runs on your device and works without an internet connection. If you choose cloud providers (OpenAI, Google AI, or Alibaba Cloud Qwen 3.5 Flash), those features require internet and your own API keys.
How to batch rename files with AI?
Drag and drop your files into RenameClick. The AI analyzes file content and suggests descriptive names. Review the suggestions and apply them with one click to batch rename hundreds of files.
What file types does RenameClick support?
Images: JPG, JPEG, PNG, GIF, WEBP, BMP, SVG, HEIC, HEIF, TIFF, TIF. Documents: PDF, DOC, DOCX, TXT, MD, CSV, RTF, ODT.
Is RenameClick free to use?
Yes! You can process unlimited files for free - AI generates names and categories for every file you drop. AI Search by content is also free for all users and does not consume credits. You get 30 credits per month to apply changes that modify files on disk (rename or move). For unlimited apply actions, upgrade to Pro Monthly ($8/mo) or Pro Lifetime ($48 one-time).
What is the AI File Sorter?
RenameClick's AI File Sorter organizes files into folders using saved sorting presets. The File Organizer UI can use AI categories to read file content and choose from presets like Documents or Media Files. Metadata folders build paths from date fields, EXIF fields, and text levels, such as Location / Year / Month / Day. Match folders scans the selected output folder and lets AI route new files into its existing subfolders, for example client or project folders. If no Match folders destination is a reasonable fit, the file stays uncategorized and is applied to the output folder root.
What are Local AI Settings?
Local AI Settings let you fine-tune the local AI engine to match your hardware. You can adjust: Context Size (token window, affects memory usage), Text Trim (max characters from documents), Custom Prompt Length (character limit for instructions), and Max Categories (expand from 8 to 20). A token calculator shows estimated usage for different scenarios. Access via the gear icon next to Local provider in Provider Settings.
What platforms does RenameClick support?
RenameClick is available for macOS (Apple Silicon and Intel) and Windows. Download the version that matches your operating system from the official website.
Why is the app size so large?
RenameClick includes a ~4GB local AI model optimized for understanding file content. This model delivers the best balance of quality, speed, and system efficiency - providing accurate results without requiring internet access or cloud processing.
Does it work with cloud storages like Google Drive, iCloud, or Dropbox?
Yes! Just install the desktop app for your cloud storage (Google Drive, iCloud Drive, Dropbox, etc.) so you can browse and drag files from it. Web browser versions won't work - you need the native desktop apps.
Can I use EXIF metadata in filenames?
Yes! RenameClick extracts EXIF metadata from photos and lets you use it in filename patterns and metadata folder presets. Use placeholders like $exif{date} for capture date, $exif{camera} for camera info, $exif{city} or $exif{country} for GPS location, and $exif{iso}, $exif{aperture}, $exif{shutter} for exposure settings. Metadata folder presets can also use date, EXIF, and text levels to create reusable folder structures like Berlin_Germany / 2026 / 04 / 30. You can view available EXIF fields for each photo directly in the app.
