# RenameClick > RenameClick is a desktop app for macOS and Windows that names supported files from their contents, organizes them into folders, and searches a selected folder by content. Current app version: 2.15.2, released August 30, 2026. Content checked against that version on September 4, 2026. ## Processing and limits - Select Local AI and install RenameClick Local AI for on-device processing. Initial model downloads, licensing, and purchase restoration have separate internet requirements. - Audio naming supports MP3, WAV, FLAC, M4A, and AAC speech recordings. Install Audio Transcription separately. Transcription is local; naming uses the selected provider. Long recordings are sampled. Song identification is not supported. - Text PDFs provide extracted text up to the configured limit. Scanned PDFs use the first page visually, not all pages. - Custom Instructions define the filename structure and language. Ordinary Format and Output Language are disabled while a custom prompt is selected. Categorization is separate. - AI Categories choose from a preset list; Metadata Folders build paths from date, EXIF, and fixed text; Match Folders chooses among up to 50 existing top-level destination folders. - Auto Flow watches folders while the app runs. Auto Apply is optional. Applied files can pass between connected rules in 2.15.2. Cycles and conflicting sources are rejected. - Rename workspace Undo holds up to 10 entries in memory. Auto Flow requires Watch off for Undo. Restart clears undo history; saved Applied records are not permanent undo checkpoints. - AI Search scans a chosen folder for a query. It does not rename or categorize results; Move to Trash affects the actual file. ## Installation and pricing - macOS direct: homepage downloads or `brew install --cask renameclick`. - Windows: Microsoft Store or `winget install 9NWF30K6GFQG -s msstore`. - Direct macOS and Windows use an email-linked license for up to 3 active devices. Activate License and Find My License are available in the app. - Mac App Store purchases are separate and restored through Apple. That build excludes cloud providers. - Free includes unlimited analysis, AI Search without apply credits, and 30 successful renames or moves per month. Renaming and moving one file together uses one credit. Failed changes use none. - Direct Pro pricing: $8/month or $48 lifetime, plus applicable tax. External cloud API usage is not included. Documents and text: PDF, DOC, DOCX, TXT, MD, CSV, RTF, ODT, JSON, JSONL, XML, YAML, YML, HTML, HTM, LOG, SQL, SRT, VTT, ICS, VCF. Audio: MP3, WAV, FLAC, M4A, AAC. Unsupported extensions are skipped. This includes spreadsheets such as XLS/XLSX, presentations such as PPT/PPTX, videos, and archives. A supported extension does not guarantee a damaged or unreadable file can be analyzed. ## Names and dates With built-in instructions selected, $1 is the generated description and $oldName is the original filename without its extension. $words{old,1..2; join="_"} selects the first two Unicode words from the original name. Selectors are positive indexes, last, or inclusive ranges; negative indexes are not supported. Missing words produce empty values. $slugcase{$1} creates lowercase words with hyphens. $lower{$1} changes case and keeps spaces. $date{YYYY-MM-DD} uses file creation date; $date{YYYY-MM-DD,modified} uses modification date. EXIF capture dates require available image metadata. A date inside a document must be requested from its content and checked. $index follows batch order; $successIndex counts successful results. Neither automatically preserves an external ID. The full syntax and illustrative outputs are in the format reference. ## Provider boundaries Local AI processes content on-device after model installation. Direct macOS and Windows also support optional OpenAI, Google, and Alibaba Cloud providers configured with the user's API key. Their processing and charges are separate from RenameClick credits. The Mac App Store build excludes those cloud providers. LM Studio and Ollama use the configured server address. If that address is remote, content leaves the computer for that server. Audio transcription remains local even when a cloud naming provider receives bounded transcript context. ## Folder exceptions With a separate destination, an unmatched Match Folders result is applied at the output root. In same-folder Auto Flow Match Folders, Recursive is disabled and unmatched files stay in place with an error. Metadata folder levels use configured fallbacks for absent values. An Auto Flow destination can feed another source after apply. A paused downstream rule scans eligible existing files when Watch starts. Stability checks wait for unchanged size and modification time, but cannot guarantee a download has completed. Undoing a stage is not a coordinated rollback of the entire chain. ## What the app does not establish Generated names and categories are suggestions, not verified accounting status, signatures, identities, event dates, or music recognition. No universal speed or accuracy benchmark is claimed. Search does not provide instant whole-computer indexing or answers over an entire document collection.
